How my Experiences at the University of Northern Colorado helped me discover my path of Healthcare

As graduation approaches I am excited and eager to enter the workforce; however it is hard to think of leaving the world of a student. I will miss the days being able to walk around campus and run into a friend. I will miss the days of coming to the business school basement and collaborating ideas with other business students. It seems like yesterday when my parents dropped me off at the New South dorms at the University of Northern Colorado.

It would be difficult to describe the lessons that I have learned in at UNC in one blog post however, I have thought of two ways my experiences at UNC helped me discover my path of healthcare.

The Monfort College of Business

After changing my major from nursing to undecided my sophomore year I found myself unsure of where my next path should take me. In the spring of 2012 I took a Foundations of Business thought class. In this class I found that there was no reason for me to say goodbye to the healthcare world. Business has allowed me to explore different fields of healthcare.

Leadership opportunities

My mother told me before I left for college: “I think you will find that you learn more outside of the classroom than inside of the classroom.” I cannot help but think how accurate this statement is. Do not get me wrong I learned more than I have ever thought possible in the classroom, however my experiences out of the classroom taught me more than I ever thought possible.

After being Vice President of Finance in my sorority, I found that I really enjoyed explaining budgets, numbers and how much I loved excel. Yes I get excited when equations you enter into excel works for the entire spreadsheet. Being president of my sorority taught me effective ways to communicate with others. After I approach the workforce I believe that communication is a key to the business world. I hope to one day help contribute the lessons that I have learned as a leader.

I am so thankful for my sorority leadership experiences. I believe that finding a community in college is so vital to growing as learning outside of the classroom. I hope to one day contribute my lessons that I have learned to the healthcare industry.

The Take Away

Staying true to my passion has led me find an interest in healthcare marketing. The Monfort College of Business has allowed me to stay true to that passion and explore different options. As I approach the job force I cannot help but think of the quote: “If there is no passion in your life, then have you really lived? Find your passion, whatever it may be. Become it, and let it become you and you will find great things happen FOR you, TO you and BECAUSE of you.” ~ T. Alan Armstrong. I have been very lucky to discover my passion at the University of Northern Colorado
